Songkran which implies Thai New Year is the most joyous occasion festival celebrated in the whole of Thailand. The word Songkran comes from the Sanskrit words for "New Year" and the Thai celebration was probably imported with major aspects of Indian culture over 2,500 years ago.
This day is celebrated with full zest and fervor throughout Thailand. This remarkable day is a total relaxing day as one tends to celebrate it with one's family and friends. Even the workers enjoy a holiday.
No such festival is complete without having to eat the delicacies of the place. Thus, huge meals are pre- pared, homes are fastidiously cleaned, and sacred altars and images respectfully washed. Family members come together to renew their bonds and exchange gossip. The most lovely rite associated with Songkran is the Wai Khon Gaa ceremony, where everyone gathers together to pour water over the hands of the community's two oldest members, giving and receiving blessings for the coming year.
On April 13, every year the streets of every town and village on the island are lined with giggling teenagers armed with an arsenal of water guns and buckets. Songkran is the most important feast for Thais. Songkran is better known for its throwing or splashing water to each others.
